LOCKPORT, Ill. ---
Paul Wottgen won both of his decisions for the University of St. Francis men's tennis team, but it was not enough as Wartburg College (Iowa) edged out the Fighting Saints 4-3 at Challenge Fitness on Saturday afternoon.
Wottgen combined with
Aidan Flores for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, but Wartburg (2-6) gained wins in the other two doubles matches (6-4 at No. 1, 6-2 at No. 3) to go up 1-0 heading into singles competition.
After Wartburg went up 2-0, the Saints rallied to tie the score at two-all courtesy of a 6-4, 6-1 win by
Sebastian Bahamondes at No. 1 and a 6-2, 6-2 victory for
Ignacio Hernandez at No. 2. Wartburg, however, answered with wins at Nos. 5 and 4 to earn the match victory.
USF's final win came from Wottgen 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
St. Francis (1-4) is at Wheaton College next Saturday night.
