Saints Fall In CCAC Tournament Quarterfinal Round

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball season came to an end on Tuesday night as the Fighting Saints dropped a 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23 decision to Olivet Nazarene University in the opening round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Desiree Anderson's double-double (15 kills, 13 digs) carried the Saints, who finished the season at 10-21.  She also authored a .314 attack percentage.

Gabriela Oliveira produced a double-figure kill count (13), as well, while Leah Talley topped the St. Francis dig chart with 21.  Other contributors included Kaylie Sippel (41 assists, 3 aces) and Madison Koelker (four blocks).

Olivet Nazarene gained 16 kills from Halle Nicholas and 10 from Kaylee Cozen.  The Tigers (12-14) also totaled 15 blocks with four different players averaging one block per set.

Each of the four sets were tight throughout with 33 total ties and 18 lead changes, but the Saints just could not get the closing kick in three of the four sets.

The first set was close early on before Olivet Nazarene went on a 9-1 run to go up 16-9.  The Saints got within two points on three separate occasions after that, but could not break down the barrier any closer in falling 25-20.

In Set 2, neither team held more than a two-point lead until Olivet Nazarene ran off four straight markers to go up 13-10.  The Saints could never put together more than three points in a row in the set and thus could never recover from that deficit as the Tigers ran off six of the final eight points.

St. Francis trailed early in Set 3 before putting together five points in a row courtesy of Anderson's two kills to go up 14-11.  Olivet Nazarene responded with five of the next six points to regain the lead at 16-15.  This time, however, the Saints did not fold, putting up five of the final eight points to get back in the match.

Set 4 featured the most ties (15) and lead changes (eight).  Olivet Nazarene jumped out to a 4-0 advantage at the start only to have the Saints respond with the next five points, including two on a pair of Oliveira kills.  The Saints then took their largest lead of the night at 17-13 with four straight points.  This time, ONU responded with six of the next seven points for a 19-18 lead.  USF regrouped to take a 23-21 lead before the hosts rallied for the final four points to claim the match.

Notes: Anderson's double-double was her 12th of the season, which placed her second on the team … The final team leaderboard had Oliveira registering the most kills (430) and aces (35), Sippel leading the way with her .240 attack percentage and 921 assists, Anderson topping the dig chart (342) and Cadence Wodrich totaling 58 blocks.
