JOLIET, Ill. --- Seven players contributed at least nine points each for the University of St. Francis women's basketball team as the Fighting Saints used a season-high point total to notch their second straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win with an 84-49 victory over Trinity Christian College at the Pat Sullivan Center on Wednesday night.
Baylei Johnson and
Tykara Harrison headlined the night with both players authoring their first collegiate double-doubles. Johnson totaled 12 points, while Harrison registered ten, with both players recording a game-high ten rebounds.
Harrison, who did her work off the bench, also produced a game-high five assists.
Topping USF's scoring chart were
Laurelei Thormeyer and
Keijah Gray with 14 points each. Thormeyer had eight rebounds and four assists, as well, while Gray secured seven caroms.
Also scoring in double figures was
Talia Pellegrini with 13 points, while
Mia Kennelly and
Jorja Bolton each netted nine points. Kennelly also matched her three steals with three assists, with Bolton dishing out four assists.
Sedona Anderson led Trinity Christian (0-7, 0-2) with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The St. Francis defense limited Trinity Christian to just 29 percent shooting from the field (18-of-62), including just 2-of-20 from long distance. The Saints just missed the 40-percent mark with their 31 baskets in 79 attempts, while going 11-for-33 from three-point range.
USF (5-3, 2-0) also gained a 58-40 advantage on the boards.    Â
Head coach
John McGinity's club took control of the game in the first 11 minutes by opening up a 19-point lead at 28-9. A 14-0 run closed out the uprising, which saw five different Saints contribute to the unanswered string of points. Trinity Christian would never get closer than 16 points the rest of the night.
Notes: Besides its point total, USF's 58 rebounds and 20 assists were also season-high efforts. Six Saints pulled in at least six boards, while five had no less than three assists each … Thormeyer's 14 points were a career high … Gray's 14 points, Johnson's ten rebounds and Harrison's 10 points and ten caroms were all their most in a St. Francis uniform … The 49 points scored by Trinity Christian as well as its shooting percentages from both the field (29 pct.) and the three-point arc (10 pct.) marked the best numbers by USF's defense this season …. The Saints continue the current three-game homestand on Saturday when they host Indiana University Northwest at 1 pm. Â
