LA CROSSE, Wis. --- The University of St. Francis women's basketball team could never get on track from long range on Tuesday night and the end result was a 65-43 setback to Viterbo University on the road.
The Fighting Saints managed to hit just one of their 29 three-point attempts in the contest, while Viterbo fared only slightly better at 5-for-20. The V-Hawks (2-4) also struggled at the free-throw line, but they had three times as many attempts to that of USF (31-9) to gain a 16-6 scoring advantage there, as well.
For the night, Viterbo shot 37.9 percent from the field (22-for-58), while USF converted at a 27.7 percent clip (18-of-65). On free throws, the hosts were just slightly better than 50 percent at 51.6, while USF was 66.7.
Akyia Baker was the lone Saint to score in double figures, finishing with ten points, while
Jorja Bolton just missed the mark with her nine points. Bolton was also the only St. Francis player to shoot better than 50 percent from the field, going 4-for-6.
For Viterbo, three of its five starters tallied at least ten points, topped by Nicole Johnson's 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Saints' only lead came in the first quarter with their 8-3 start. By the end of the frame, though, Viterbo was able to force an 11-all tie before outscoring USF (3-3) by ten points in both the second and third quarters.
The second quarter was the only one in which the Saints shot 40 percent or better (4-for-10), but they committed ten of their season-high 22 turnovers in the same ten-minute stretch.
Head coach
John McGinty's club did get the deficit down to five points (29-24) early in the third quarter only to have Viterbo go on a 20-6 run over the next eight minutes to regain control.
Notes: Le'lani Harris saw her streak of scoring ten-or-more points in a game end at eight contests dating back to last year … Bolton's nine points were a season high as were the team's 45 rebounds …
Mia Kennelly (8 boards),
Talia Pellegrini (7) and
Baylei Johnson (7) all registered their most rebounds on the season … The Saints are at Illinois State University on Sunday at 2 pm for an exhibition affair.
