MARION, Ind. --- NAIA No. 3-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University continued its season-long unbeaten streak, while Taylor University (Ind.) rallied for a four-set victory over the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team to wrap up the Fighting Saints' weekend at the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday morning.
Indiana Wesleyan ran its record to 21-0 with only two-set losses on the year by earning a 25-6, 25-12, 25-9 victory over USF before Taylor (12-14) came from behind to win 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16.
Gabriela Oliveira edged out
Desiree Anderson for the team lead in kills, 20-19, over the two matches with
Kaylie Sippel accounting for 46 of the team's 59 assists.Â
Defensively, the Saints gained five blocks from
Taylor Connolly and 15 digs from Anderson.
Match 1: Indiana Wesleyan def. USF 25-6, 25-12, 25-9
The Wildcats dominated the match, never allowing USF to gain a lead in any of the three sets. Indiana Wesleyan built 20-2 and 12-2 advantages in Sets 1 and 3 to cruise.Â
In Set 2, the closest the Saints could get was 13-10 before IWU reeled off nine straight points.
Match 2: Taylor def. USF 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16
The Saints (6-13) rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to win Set 1. After forcing an eight-all tie, the Saints used a 5-0 run to go up 17-14 behind a pair of
Abby Sippel aces. Taylor was able to force one more tie at 20-all before USF scored five of the final seven markers courtesy of two kills from Oliveira and another one from Anderson.
Set 2 was a back-and-forth affair that featured 14 ties and five lead changes. St. Francis got within a point of going up 2-0 at 24-23 only to have Taylor produce three kills down the stretch as part of a closing 4-1 run.
In Set 3, USF got behind 8-2 at the start before closing to within two points on three separate occasions, including the last time at 14-12. Taylor then ran off seven of the next eight points to go up 2-1.
The Trojans wiped out an initial 8-6 deficit in Set 4 with an 11-2 scoring advantage to seal the match victory.
Anderson totaled 18 kills in the contest with Oliveira contributing 14. Sippel provided 41 assists and eight digs, while Connolly totaled four blocks.
Notes: Anderson's 18 kills in the Taylor match were a season-high mark … Sippel's 41 assists in the latter contest marked the second time this season that she has recorded 40-plus assists … Connolly tied her season-high in blocks against Taylor … The Saints went 1-4 on the road trip. They return home Tuesday to face Olivet Nazarene University in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt.
