PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. --- An off-night offensively for the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team led to Trinity Christian College returning the favor of an earlier three-set sweep with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-17 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Tuesday night.
Fortunately for USF, Olivet Nazarene University and Saint Xavier University also dropped their league matches on Tuesday, enabling the Fighting Saints to maintain their hold on second place in the conference standings with St. Ambrose University. Both teams are 7-4 with St. Francis now at 9-17 overall.
No Saint player was able to reach double figures in kills on the night with
Desiree Anderson topping the list with nine to go along with ten digs.Â
Kaylie Sippel and
Gabriela Oliveira also recorded ten digs each with Sippel providing 16 assists, as well.
Kylie Kany came off the bench to play a role in three of the team's four blocks.
The Saints hit at just a .018 clip (26 kills, 24 errors, 110 chances), while Trinity Christian (8-17, 6-5) produced a .231 attacking percentage, topped by a .462 first set.
The opening set was tight early before the hosts broke a seven-all deadlock with a 10-1 run. That would eventually swell to a closing 18-4 scoring advantage and the 1-0 lead.
Set 2 was the most competitive with seven ties and six lead changes. Trailing 4-1, the Saints used kills from Anderson and Sippel to gain a 6-5 edge. USF also led 13-12 before Trinity Christian followed with a 7-2 run to go up 19-15. From there, St. Francis would get within two points on multiple occasions, but no closer.
Set 3 was also close early before the Trolls slowly increased their advantage as the match progressed.
Notes: Sippel's double-double was her 13th of the campaign … The Saints close out the week with home contests against Roosevelt University on Thursday and Indiana University Northwest on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 pm.
