Santamarta Delivers Game-Winner In Final 74 Seconds

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- Pablo Rubio Guerra added to his league-leading numbers with his third multi-goal match of the season and Ander Santamarta provided the game-winner with just 74 seconds remaining for the University of St. Francis men's soccer team in its 3-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference road victory over St. Ambrose University on Wednesday night.

Santamarta chose the perfect time to produce his first goal of the season, hitting his shot just inside the left post from 25 yards out to snap the Fighting Saints' three-game losing streak.  The goal also marked the first time that head coach Vince Martinez's team led in the contest.

The Saints (7-6-1, 4-4-1 CCAC) had to battle back from both 1-0 and 2-1 deficits with Rubio Guerra forcing the first tie in the 19th minute after the host Fighting Bees scored less than three minutes into the contest.  Diego Cortes was credited with the assist on the play.

St. Ambrose (3-7-2, 3-5) regained the lead less than two minutes after Rubio Guerra's first game-tying goal on a shot that hit the crossbar and then ricocheted off the back of the head of USF goalkeeper Erick Murillo into the net.

The contest stayed 2-1 in favor of St. Ambrose for the next 30-plus minutes before Rubio Guerra delivered again.  This time, Daniel Simon provided the assistance to knot the game back up at two-all.

St. Ambrose did have one final attempt at creating a third tie, but Owen Hull's header hit the left post with 43 seconds remaining on the game's final shot.

Murillo collected the win in goal for the Saints, making five saves.

As a team, the Saints outshot St. Ambrose 17-13, with an 8-7 edge in attempts on goal.

Notes: The victory eclipsed last year's six-match win total and marked the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Saints have secured at least seven wins … Rubio Guerra's multi-goal game was the fourth of his career.  His 12 goals and 29 points lead both the team and the conference … Simon's assist was his second of the year, while Cortes' was his first … The Saints play their final regular-season home match of the year on Saturday when they celebrate Senior Day against new league member Viterbo University.  Kickoff is 3:30 pm.
