Saints Come Up One Goal Short In Battle of League Unbeatens

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. --- Pablo Rubio Guerra extended his goal-scoring streak to six matches in a row, but the University of St. Francis men's soccer team had its winning streak snapped at six games as the Fighting Saints came up one goal short in a 2-1 decision to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday night.  The contest was a matchup between the last two unbeatens in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Rubio Guerra's goal came with just under six minutes to play and countered Olivet Nazarene's goal at 79:10.  USF, however, did not have an answer to ONU's first goal, which came just five minutes prior to  halftime.  That proved to be the difference in the end.

Olivet Nazarene (7-2, 5-0 CCAC) outshot the Saints 20-7, including 12-4 in the closing half.  The Tigers also attempted seven shots on goal to USF's two.  St. Francis' only other shot on goal also came in the second half with Santos Contreras providing the attempt at 61:38.

Erick Murillo recorded five saves in goal for the Fighting Saints (6-3, 3-1).

Notes: With the goal, Rubio Guerra became the team leader in that category with eight, while tying Sergio Fernandez-Arango for the top spot in points with 20 … Fernandez-Arango's point streak came to an end on Saturday night.  He delivered either a goal or an assist in each of his previous six matches prior to the ONU contest … USF's seven total shots and two on goal were both season-low marks for the squad … Olivet Nazarene is among others receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll ... The Saints are home for each of their next two matches starting with Wednesday's CCAC tilt against Governors State University at 7 pm.
