MILWAUKEE --- The University of St. Francis women's basketball team kept its five-year string intact of never dropping more than two games in a row in any one season with a convincing 90-54 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Cardinal Stritch University on Saturday afternoon.
Eight players contributed to the fifth 90-plus point performance of the season with at least six points each as the Fighting Saints got back on the winning track in improving to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in league play.Â
Hannah Swiatek's hot hand led the group with 16 points after missing just one of her seven shots from the field. She also came away with five rebounds and four assists.
Other double-figure scorers included
Justene Charlesworth and
Alina Jahnke (15 points each) and
Jordan Pyle (12 points, 5 assists). All 15 of Charlesworth's points came from beyond the arc with five baskets in seven attempts. Jahnke also turned in a game-high seven rebounds.
Adding to the point total were
Mia Kennelly (9 points),
Talia Pellegrini (8),
Le'lani Harris (7) and
Josie Graffeo (6).Â
Cardinal Stritch (3-13, 3-7) was led by Natalie Tomaszewski's 13 points.
The Saints used a 15-2 run and 69.2 percent shooting from the field (9-of-13) in the first quarter to open up a 24-13 lead. Cardinal Stritch would get that deficit down to 27-24 midway through the second quarter before another 16-2 outburst for USF eventually resulted in a 50-32 advantage at the break.
CSU would never challenge again after that being limited by its 29.8 percent shooting mark (17-of-57) for the contest. The Wolves were also out-boarded 46-29 and allowed the Saints to pick up 18 second-chance points to their one.
Notes: The Saints made 16 of their first 27 shots (.593) in the contest covering the first 20 minutes of the game and finished at .508 … Cardinal Stritch's sub-.300 shooting clip from the field marked the eighth time this season that USF has held an opponent below that percentage … Jahnke's 15 points were her highest total as a Saint … USF committed just ten turnovers in the contest, its second-lowest total of the campaign … St. Francis is back on the road Wednesday to face Governors State University at 5 pm.  Â
