JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball team kept its record perfect in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with its 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 victory over Roosevelt University on Thursday night. The Saints are now 3-0 in league play and 7-4 overall.
Offensive leaders on the night were
Stephanie Woods with her eight kills and .286 attack percentage and
Abby Lab with her 13 assists. Also in the mix was
Gabriela Oliveira with seven kills.
Hannah Monfre topped the team charts in digs (16) and service aces (3).
Trailing 7-5 in the first set of the night, the Saints turned things around with a 13-2 run before Oliveira ended the set with a kill later on. During the run, USF collected two kills and two aces from
Desiree Anderson and two more aces from both Monfre and
Kaylie Sippel.
In Set 2, Roosevelt (0-11, 0-2) opened up a 14-8 lead before the Saints cut the deficit to 14-12. The Lakers pretty much held that advantage for the majority of the second half of the set, including 23-20 late. St. Francis, however, shocked its guests with the final five points of the set courtesy of a Woods kill and two more from Oliveira, who excited the crowd with her back-to-back spikes to end the set.
The Saints would also fall behind in Set 3 by a 6-0 count at the start, but recovered with a 7-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage. They would add another string of four unanswered points later to provide a bit more separation en route to the 11-point victory.
Notes: Lab's 13 assists were a season high for her as were Monfre's three aces … The Saints closed out the six-match homestand going 3-3 and now go on the road for six in a row. It starts on Friday at the Indiana Institute of Technology Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament when the Saints face both Indiana University Southeast (3 pm) and the hosts (5 pm).
