JOLIET, Ill. --- All 16 University of St. Francis women's volleyball players saw action as the Saints improved to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in league play with a 25-11, 26-24, 25-19 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Governors State University on Thursday night at the Sullivan Center.
Fourteen of those players recorded at least one dig, topped by
Desiree Anderson's nine. She fell just one dig short of a double-double with her 11 kills, which was also a team high. Sharing the latter honor was
Stephanie Woods, who had another strong game offensively with her .500 attack percentage (11 kills/2 errors/18 chances).
Peyton Baird also turned in a near-unstoppable performance with her seven kills and only one error in nine attacking attempts.
The three-player setting contingent was in full force, as well, with
Abby Lab's 12 assists and ten each from
Kaylie Sippel and
Hannah Pacheco.Â
Governors State (3-11, 0-8) opened with the first four points of the match before the Saints settled in. They erased that deficit in a big way with a 12-1 run led by Anderson's two kills and an ace to go up 16-7.Â
Gabriela Oliveira fueled the final 6-1 surge with a pair of kills.
The second set was the tightest of the three with neither team grabbing more than a three-point lead in a set that featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. Governors State scored three points in a row late to get to game point (24-23), but the Saints rallied with kills from Woods and Anderson and an ace by
Bailey Baird to close it out.
St. Francis led throughout the third set, but Governors State stayed within arm's length. A 4-0 burst to go up 10-5 followed by three unanswered points to push the advantage to 21-15 put the match out of reach.
Notes: The contest marked the second straight match in which Woods posted no less than a .476 attack percentage. In that same span, she has produced her top two kill totals of the season … Baird's .667 attack reading was her second-best showing of the year … In all three sets, the Saints attacked at no less than a .250 clip and finished the match at .267 opposite Governors State's .077 mark … Head coach
Cara Currier's club concludes a busy week of conference play on Saturday with a 1 pm matchup at Indiana University South Bend. Â Â
