Saints Sweep Indiana South Bend

JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis baseball team gained its fifth doubleheader sweep of the season on Wednesday when it defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Indiana University South Bend 2-1 and 6-2 at Duly Health and Care Field.

The Saints (26-24, 20-7 CCAC) took advantage of an Indiana South Bend error to set up the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener before opening up a 6-0 lead after seven innings of the nightcap. In the latter affair, the two teams combined to leave 26 runners on the bases.

John McGuire helped key the first-game win with his efforts both on the mound and at the plate. John Peterson played a big role at the bottom of the order with his four hit game in the nightcap.

Game 1: USF 2, Indiana South Bend 1
Indiana South Bend broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning courtesy of a St. Francis error, but the Saints got the run right back in the bottom of the frame when McGuire helped his own cause. He delivered a clutch two out single down the right field line to plate Eric Maffie, who singled with one out to start the rally. It was one of two hits in the contest for Maffie.

Both teams committed an error to open the seventh inning, but McGuire was able to get out of the jam with three ground outs. McGuire then reached on the IUSB error to start USF's final at bat. After Scott Tumilty came in to pinch run, Alex Martinez moved him over to second base with a walk before Jonathan Wolf drove Tumilty in with his second single of the game.

McGuire (5-3) went the distance to move into a first place tie for the team lead in wins. He scattered six hits and two walks, while striking out two batters in the seven inning affair. The only run he did allow was unearned.

Game 2: USF 6, Indiana South Bend 2
Peterson went 4 for 5 with two runs scored and another driven in in the lower half of the order to spark the sweep. Jake Vera added three hits, while Maffie matched his two hits from the first game with two more in Game 2.

The Saints gained their first run on an error in the second inning before Vera made it 2-0 in the sixth inning with one of his three hits. Peterson and Noah Kararo then gave USF some breathing room with a four run seventh inning. Peterson drove home one of the runs with Kararo plating another two with his two out, two run single.

Ryan Daly (4-2) was strong through the first four plus innings. He did not allow his first hit until one out into the fifth inning. He then loaded the bases in the sixth inning before Nick Clemmons came on in relief to stop the rally.

Daly went 5 2/3 innings allowing only three hits to go along with three walks, while striking out seven. Clemmons tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
