Saints Rally To Sweep Doubleheader From Trinity Christian

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. --- A two run seventh-inning rally enabled the University of St. Francis softball team to sweep a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Trinity Christian College on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints registered a 9-2 first-game victory before eking out the 2-1 nightcap win to improve to 19-9 overall and 9-3 in league play.

Danielle Callahan was the hitting star in the first game going 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. Kaylie Sippel, who collected a pair of hits in each end of the twin bill, started the second game rally with a leadoff double.

Bridget McDermott and Hannah Vachon produced the route going victories in the circle.

Game 1: USF 9, Trinity Christian 2
Callahan got things started early with her two run home run in the first inning and then added a two run double in the seventh inning as part of a three hit, four-RBI game for her. She was one of five Saints in the contest to record multiple hits. The others were Sippel, Madisen Tucker, Gracyn Gabriel, and Kenna Kleinert, all of whom also drove in a run.

The Saints built a 3-0 lead after two innings before Trinity Christian tightened things up at 3-2 after four innings. Head coach Amanda Jensen's club regained a comfortable distance late with a pair of three run innings in the fifth and sixth frames.

That was more than enough for McDermott, who improved to 12-1 on the campaign. She allowed seven hits, while striking out three batters.

Game 2: USF 2, Trinity Christian 1
For the longest time, it appeared as though Trinity Christian's sacrifice fly in the third inning was going to hold up as the only run of the game. Through the first six innings, the Saints managed just three hits and had only one runner get as far as second base.

Sippel (2-for-3) changed that with her double to open the seventh inning. One out later, Gabriel singled to right center to put runners at the two corner bases. Pinch hitter Mollie Beckman followed with a groundout to plate pinch runner Alyssa Morena with a heads up Gabriel moving to third base. That play eventually set up the winning run when Trinity Christian committed a two out error on the ensuing play.

Vachon evened her record out at 5-5 with the comeback win. She only allowed five hits, while striking out a pair of batters and not allowing a walk.
