BABSON PARK, Fla. --- A six-run fifth inning enabled the University of St. Francis baseball team to score an 8-4 first-game victory over Webber International University on Sunday afternoon before the Warriors gained the rubber game of the three game series with their 10-1 win in the nightcap. The hosts claimed a 10-3 victory in the opener on Saturday night.
Noah Kararo drove in runs in each end of the twinbill for the Saints, who received quality relief pitching from
Matt Lopez and
Kevin Kardas in the opener.
The first game loss for Webber International was just their fourth of the season against 21 wins.
Game 1: USF 8, Webber International 4
Webber International opened a 4-1 lead after the first two innings before Lopez and Kardas settled down the Warrior bats. They combined to retire 16 of the 18 batters they faced in tossing 5 1/3 innings of no hit baseball.
Lopez (2-0) earned the victory, accounting for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless pitching. His only man to reach came on a walk. Kardas' only batter to reach in his three innings also came on a free pass. He struck out four to collect his first save of the season.
The Saints (4-9) picked up single runs in the second and third innings on a wild pitch and a groundout, respectively, before nine straight batters reached (6 hits, 2 walks, 1 hit batsmen) in the fifth inning when USF scored six times. Five of the runs came after two outs.
Providing the RBI hits were Kararo,
Sam Tumilty,
John Peterson (double),
Scott Tumilty,
Gio Pappas, and
Quinn McGuire. For Kararo, it was his second run batted in of the game.
Game 2: Webber International 10, USF 1
The Saints managed only three hits in the nightcap with
Luke Ketchum collecting two of them, including a triple. Kararo drove in USF's only run with a groundout, which initially gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Webber International accounted for all of the scoring the rest of the way with
Angel Diaz driving in four more runs on three hits to finish the three-game series with ten runs batted in.
Kenny Rodriguez followed his three run home run in the first game with a two run shot in the second game.
All five of the Warrior runs in the third inning were sparked by a two out error. Each of the next five batters reached after the miscue making all five runs unearned and tagging
John McGuire (0-1) with the loss.
