Saints Split Decisions Against Dakota Wesleyan, Jamestown

TUCSON --- Offsetting a 6-4 setback to Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) from earlier in the week, the University of St. Francis softball team tied its season high in run production with a 9-0 first game win over the Tigers on Thursday. The Saints, however, could have used some of the those runs in the nightcap as they were shutout for the first time this spring, being dealt an 8-0 loss to University of Jamestown (N.D.).

Bridget McDermott saw one streak continue – winning for the sixth straight time – in the opener, while having another one – her 10 game hitting streak – come to an end versus Jamestown. Danielle Callahan had the latter streak continue, extending her streak of hits to 11 games with three on the day.

Kaylie Sippel led the offensive production with two hits in each game. Callahan and Brittany Osborne also posted hits in each end of the twinbill.

Game 1: USF 9, Dakota Wesleyan 0
Five different Saints produced multiple hits, while three drove in a pair of runs each leading to multiple runs being scored in four of the six innings played. Gracyn Gabriel topped the hitting charts with three in as many at bats and two runs batted in.

Members of the two-hit club were Osborne, Callahan, McDermott, and Sippel.

USF scored right from the get go with run producing hits from Callahan and Sippel in the first inning. Kenna Kleinert had a two run single in the fourth, Gabriel provided the same feat in the fifth and McDermott capped the scoring with her two run double in the sixth inning to end the contest.

McDermott (6-0) gained her second shutout of the season thanks to eight strikeouts against only one walk and four hits.

Game 2: Jamestown 8, USF 0
The Saints (8-4) had the hits – six – but could not bunch any of them together as they had only one runner get as far as third base and another reach second. Kat Miska (5-3) struck out eight batters against one walk in the five inning game for the winners.

The Jimmies (11-8) scored all their runs in odd numbered innings with one in the first, three in the second, and four to close things out in the fifth inning. Eight different players contributed at least one hit with six driving in runs.

Sippel was the only Saint to have multiple hits.
