LOCKPORT, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis men's tennis team opened up a 1-0 lead after doubles play Sunday morning, but fell one singles win short of a match victory as Wartburg College (Iowa) rallied to claim a 4-3 decision at Challenge Fitness.
After Wartburg (9-5) opened doubles action with a 6-2 victory in the No.2 slot, the Saints (1-5) answered with
Sebastian Bahamondes and
Erwan Le Guennec winning at No.1 6-3 and
Aidan Flores and
Paul Wottgen doing the same at No.3 by a 7-5 count.
USF then went up 2-0 when
Daniel Espinosa cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory to open up singles play in the No.4 slot.Â
Wartburg rallied to knot the match at two-all with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-4 decisions at No.6 and No.5 singles before Bahamondes regained the lead for the Saints. His second victory of the day came at the No.2 spot, 7-5, 6-1.
Wottgen almost got the Saints the match victory at No.3 singles. He suffered a 7-6 (7-3) setback in the first set before dropping the second set 6-3.
Le Guennec also gave
Lucas Huffman all he could handle in the deciding match with Huffman coming out on top in the end, 6-4, 7-5 at No.1.
