Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints Rally But Can't Hang On In 67-63 Setback To St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa --- It will come down to the last game of the season for both University of St. Francis and St. Ambrose University for the final spot in next week's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament after the latter moved into a tie for the eighth and final spot with the Saints after defeating them 67-63 on Wednesday night.

The two teams sit one game in back of both Judson University and Lincoln College, which are currently tied for the No.6 seed at 11-10 in league play. St. Ambrose and St. Francis are 10-11 in the CCAC.

Trinity International is also in the mix at 9-12 in the conference.

Only three of the five teams will earn a berth in next week's eight-team tournament field. That will be determined by their final finish in the league standings and if tied after play on Saturday, a ratings system will be instituted to break the tie.

The Saints (14-12 overall) trailed for all but six seconds of Wednesday's contest with their only lead coming after they rallied back from a 13 point first half deficit and trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half. A 13-2 run created the one point lead (52-51) with 10:53 remaining in the contest. Carter Fayhee, Joey Buggemi, Bymnet Tecle, and Nadav Gerner all provided no less than three points during the rally with Gerner's trey putting the Saints up for the only time in the contest.

Six seconds later, the Saints were hit with two technical fouls with St. Ambrose connecting on all four free throws to regain the lead at 55-52. From there, USF got the deficit down to one point twice, including 62-61 after going on a run of seven unanswered points ending at the 2:48 mark.

A typically reliable free throw shooting team and coming into the night at 77 percent from the charity stripe on the season, USF could never regain the lead missing on four of its final five free throw attempts in the closing 3:35 to finish at 66.7 percent (12-of-18).

Overall, the Saints ended the contest shooting 35 percent from the field (21-of-60), but were just 3-of-15 from three-point range in the closing half. St. Ambrose opened the game by shooting 48.5 percent from the field to build a 38-29 halftime lead. USF held the Fighting Bees to just six field goals in 21 second half attempts (28.6 pct.) to leave the hosts at 40.7 percent overall (22-of-54).

Darius Wright and Buggemi were the only Saints to score in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Lewis Holey just missed on a double double with 10 rebounds and nine points. Fayhee added seven points and seven boards.

St. Ambrose (13-15) had four of its five starters put up at least ten points topped by Tom Kazanecki's 18 points to go along with a team high eight rebounds.
