Saints Drop Series Finale At Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn. --- Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) put up runs in six of eight innings on Sunday afternoon to sweep the two-game weekend series from the University of St. Francis baseball team with a 12-2 victory.

After falling behind 5-0, the Saints looked to get back in the contest in the fourth inning when they started to solve Lion starting pitcher Wesley Culley. After the first ten batters were retired in order by Culley, USF collected three straight hits from Jake Vera, Eric Maffie, and Jake LaSota. LaSota's double plated the first St. Francis run and John McGuire followed one batter later with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 contest.

The Saints (1-3) also had chances to score in both the fifth and eighth innings before Freed-Hardeman (5-2) quashed those rallies. USF had runners on first and third base with only one out in the fifth inning and the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth inning only to line out to end both innings.

LaSota registered his second two hit game in as many days and finished the weekend going 5-for-9 in his last three contests. The Saints finished with seven hits on the day.

Freed-Hardeman countered with 15 hits, including seven for extra bases. Two of those were home runs from Hunter Beecham (3-run) and William Kelley (2-run). Kelley went 4-for-5 on the afternoon with three runs batted in and another three scored. Beecham collected three hits in four at bats as did Will McCall.

Sean Rooney joined Kelley and Beecham in driving in three runs each.

Mason Morgan (2-0) gained the win in relief, while Ryan Daly (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season for USF. He went the first two innings, allowing just one run.

One of five relievers on the day for the Saints, Sam Pileggi struck out four of the eight batters he faced in his two scoreless innings of work.
