HENDERSON, Tenn. ---
Joe Weatherford hit a three run home run in the third inning and Lyon College (Ark.) added two more runs later on to put a damper on the University of St. Francis baseball team's season opener in a 5-0 setback on Friday night.
Weatherford's home run came with two outs in the third inning and just after the Scots (4-2) snuffed out USF's only real scoring chance one half inning earlier when
Noah Kararo was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice. Lyon would go on to add single runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to account for the rest of the scoring.
Kararo provided half of USF's offense with a pair of singles in the first and third innings. The Saints' other two hits came from
Josh Kirnbauer and
Eric Maffie, whose single in the fifth inning would wind up being St. Francis' last hit of the contest.
Only one Saint batter would reach base the rest of the night, a two out walk by
Jonathan Wolf in the ninth inning.
Four pitchers combined on the shutout for Lyon with
Bodey Ellis (1-0) working the first five innings to earn the victory.Â
Nick Villasenor (0-1) suffered the loss for the Saints.
Lyon's offense was led by
Troy Strack and
Alec White, each of whom authored three hits. Strack also scored a pair of runs.
