HOLY CROSS, Ind. --- A 15-1 run late in the first half followed by an 11-1 burst in the early part of the second half propelled the University of St. Francis men's basketball team to a 63-52 victory over Holy Cross College in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. Guards
Darius Wright and
Jalen Reneau fueled the two surges leading to their 13- and 12-point performances to lead the team.
Tied at 15-all with 7:13 remaining in the first half, the Saints (3-4, 2-3 CCAC) doubled up their scoring, while holding Holy Cross (4-8, 1-5) to just one point over a nearly five-minute time span. USF converted on five of its seven field goal attempts and all three free throw tries during the stretch with Holy Cross going 0-for-5 from the field and 1-for-3 at the charity stripe.
Reneau scored five of his 12 points during that period of time with Wright totaling four points. Providing three points each were
Carter Fayhee and
Aitor Anabitarte. That enabled the Saints to go into the break with a nine-point lead, 30-21.
The advantage would swell to 17 points (41-24) just over four minutes into the second half when St. Francis connected on five straight possessions highlighted by Reneau's five points and four more from Wright. USF would lead by double digits the rest of the afternoon, including by as many as 21 points on a pair of occasions.
Ten Saints in all contributed to the scoring column and their 51.1 percent shooting mark from the field (23-of-45). USF also connected on 11 of its 13 free throws and 6-of-14 three-pointers.
Besides Wright and Reneau, Fayhee contributed nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. Anabitarte shared the latter honor with Fayhee, while also providing seven points.
Holy Cross, which had only one player hit for ten points, shot just 38.8 percent from the field (19-of-49) and was 4-of-14 from beyond the arc (28.6 pct.). Mick Sullivan led the hosts with his ten points off the bench.
