DAVENPORT, Iowa --- The University of St. Francis men's soccer team held three separate leads, including two late advantages, but St. Ambrose University rallied each time leaving the two teams to have to settle for a 3-3 tie in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (4-6-2, 2-4-1 CCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the game's 15th minute on an
Anthony Derka goal off a feed from
Sergio Fernandez-Arango and it appeared as though that might hold up through the first 45 minutes. St. Ambrose, however, got a late first-half goal with just 24 seconds remaining before the break to knot the score at one-all.
The contest stayed at that score for another 30-plus minutes before a flurry of activity in the game's final 14 minutes resulted in the two teams combining for four goals.
Fernandez-Arango found a wide open
Cameron Schroder in front of the net at 76:30 allowing the Saints to regain the lead at 2-1. Jorge Brizuela answered back five minutes later to force the match's second tie.
Ander Santamarta then looked to bring USF home the victory when he delivered a goal with just 88 seconds remaining in regulation. Yet again though, St. Ambrose (3-6-2, 2-3-2) was able to respond, this time with Owen Gannaway's shot ricocheting off USF goalkeeper
Carson Heglund's hands and into the net for the final tally of the afternoon.
The Saints outshot St. Ambrose both overall (17-12) and on goal (9-7), while the two teams each had six corner kicks.
Notes: Fernandez-Arango's two assists moved him into sole possession of second place in the league standings with seven on the season. He also ranks tied for second with 19 total points … Santamarta's goal was his fifth of the season, while for Schroder it was his third in as many games … Derka's tally was his second of the season … Heglund returned to goal following a two-game absence … The Saints complete their two-match road trip when they face Trinity International University in Deerfield on Tuesday at 3 pm.
