MILWAUKEE, Wis. --- A battle between two of the hottest women's soccer teams in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference went the way of Cardinal Stritch University as the Wolves edged out the University of St. Francis 1-0 on Saturday night.
The victory not only extended CSU's winning streak to seven matches, but also gave the Wolves' program a share of the regular-season conference title with Olivet Nazarene University. Both teams finished 11-1-1 in league play, while Cardinal Stritch improved to 13-3-1 overall.
The Saints, meanwhile, had their season-high four-match winning streak snapped, but not before a fight. Cardinal Stritch did not land the winning goal until the 76th minute when Nora Vangsnes found the back of the net.
Up until that point, USF goalkeeper
Krystal Rodriguez had stopped six shots on goal by Cardinal Stritch. That included a rapid fire of four shots on goal in a five-minute span late in the first half.
USF's three shots on goal among its four total shots all came in the second half, including a back save in the 66th minute that would have put the Saints up 1-0.Â
Andrea Aguirre provided two of the four shots. She had a chance at tying the contest in the closing three seconds, but was denied by Carla Sastre, who posted her fifth shutout of the season.Â
Cardinal Stritch finished with 22 total shots with nine coming on goal. Rodriguez stopped seven of those attempts with another shot being a back save.
The Wolves also took all nine corner shots.
Notes: The contest was the ninth match this season for USF decided by one goal. The Saints are 5-4 in those games … The match was also only the fourth time this year the Saints did not score in a contest … Of Cardinal Stritch's 13 wins on the season, only two were 1-0 decisions. In each of the other 11 victories, the Wolves scored multiple goals … Playoff pairings will not be announced until after the regular-season concludes on Tuesday, but it appears as though the Saints will match up against Trinity Christian College in a battle of No. 4 and 5 seeds next Saturday in Palos Heights for the quarterfinal round of the CCAC Tournament.
