MILWAUKEE, Wis. --- A career-high 11 saves from
Carson Heglund were not enough to extend the University of St. Francis men's soccer team's season as the Fighting Saints fell 2-1 to Cardinal Stritch University in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday night.
USF needed a win on Saturday in the final game of the regular season to land the eighth and final spot in the CCAC Tournament. Instead, the Saints finish with a 4-7-1 league record and ninth-place finish, two points short of a tournament bid. Overall, the Saints went 6-9-2.
The challenge become a bit more difficult when Cardinal Stritch (11-5-1, 9-2-1) scored just 2:40 into the contest on the first shot of the match. The Wolves would add an insurance tally just seven seconds before the end of the first half, which would be the back-breaker for the Saints in the end.
USF would get back into the game on
Pablo Alvarez's goal in the 66th minute off a feed from
Sergio Fernandez-Arango. The Saints, however, would get only three more shots off the rest of the night with only one being on goal in the game's closing two minutes.
Cardinal Stritch finished the contest with a 21-9 overall shot advantage with the Wolves also attempting 16 shots on goal to USF's five.
Notes: The Saints closed out the season with each of their last seven losses all coming by one goal … Heglund tied his career high in saves. He also produced 11 stops against Cardinal Stritch last year ... Alvarez's goal was his first as a Saint … Fernandez-Arango finished the season with eight assists and 26 points, both of which ranked second best in the league through regular-season play. He also had a team-high nine goals.
