Saints Enter Postseason Tournament on Winning Note

JOLIET, Ill. --- Looking to head into the postseason on a winning note, the University of St. Francis softball team did just that on Tuesday night, snapping a season-high four-game losing streak with 7-1 and 8-0 victories over Trinity Christian College in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Inwood Softball Complex.

The Saints (21-13, 11-11 CCAC) used a six-run outburst in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie in the opener before scoring in four of five innings to invoke the mercy-rule in the nightcap.

The middle infield of second baseman Christina Lorenzatti (FR/Beecher, Ill.) and shortstop Brittany Osborne (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) combined to go 9-for-16 with eight runs batted in on the night. Lorenzatti drove in three runs in each of the two games and finished her day going 5-for-8 with four doubles. Osborne collected two hits and one RBI in each contest.

In the circle, USF pitchers Hannah Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) (9-6) and Bridget McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) (4-4) yielded only five hits over the course of the two games with McDermott's lone hit allowed being a bunt single.

Game 1 --- USF 7, Trinity Christian 1

For the longest time, it appeared as though USF first baseman Kayla Garcia's (GR/Chicago, Ill.) RBI single in the first inning would hold up as the only run of the contest.  Trinity Christian, however, was able to put its third and fourth hits of the game together in the sixth inning to plate its first and only run of the day to tie the contest at one-all.

The Saints then unloaded in the bottom half of the inning scoring six times with Lorenzatti's bases-clearing double accounting for half of the runs. The other three runs scored on singles by designated player Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) and Osborne as well as a groundout from Maddie Massaro (SO/Romeoville, Ill.).

Vachon went the distance for the ninth time on the season allowing just the four hits, while striking out seven batters against no walks.

Game 2 --- USF 8, Trinity Christian 0

Third baseman Danielle Callahan's (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) solo home run in the first inning wound up being the only run the Saints would need in the nightcap, but they added three runs in the second inning and two more in both the third and fifth innings just for good measure. Callahan provided two more RBIs with her single in the second inning.

Lorenzatti also drove home three runs with her three hits, while Tucker contributed to USF's 12-hit attack with two singles of her own.

A bunt single to open the fourth inning was the only hit to blemish McDermott's perfect-game bid. It wound up being the only batter to reach base for the Trolls (9-21, 5-13) in the shortened five-inning contest.

Up next is the CCAC Tournament for head coach Amanda Jensen's team. The 12-team, double-elimination tournament begins on Thursday (May 6) at 11 am for the Saints when they take on Lincoln College at the Crown Point (Ind.) SportsPlex.
