Saints End Season With 7-1 Setback to Olivet Nazarene

JOLIET, Ill. --- Two bad innings did the University of St. Francis baseball team in at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with the second time coming in a 7-1 setback to top-seeded Olivet Nazarene University in an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon at DuPage Medical Group Field.

The first time came at the start of the tournament when the No.5-seeded Fighting Saints allowed ten runs in the seventh inning en route to a 13-10 setback to No.4 seed Indiana University South Bend. Three straight wins followed, making St. Francis one of only three teams left standing in the tournament entering play on Tuesday.

A five-run fourth inning, however, did the Saints in on Tuesday as Olivet Nazarene opened the fateful inning with each of the first five batters reaching base (three hits, one walk, one hit batsman) as well as seven of the first eight. That broke up a scoreless deadlock before the Tigers finished off their scoring one inning later with two more runs.

The Saints could never build any momentum in the contest, only getting one runner on base in each of the second, third, fifth and seventh innings. They would finally put a pair of hits together in the ninth inning from Travis Schoonover (GR/Braidwood, Ill.), and Noah Kararo (GR/Oswego, Ill.) with Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.) driving in the team's lone run on a fielder's choice.

USF would finish with seven hits on the day with three coming in the final inning. Foster Heise (GR/Lisle, Ill.) was the only Saint to provide multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Nick Clemmons (SR/Channahon, Ill.) (0-2) threw three scoreless innings at the start before yielding the five runs in the fourth inning.

The Saints closed out their season at 24-20 overall.
