JOLIET, Ill. --- Bridget McDermott's big day at the plate and her victory in the circle moved the University of St. Francis softball team to 14-2 on the season with its sixth doubleheader sweep of the season, this time by 7-4 and 6-4 counts over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Judson University on Wednesday at the Inwood Softball Complex.
McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) went 3-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and another three driven in as the Saints opened the home portion of their season at the newly-turfed facility. She and third baseman Danielle Callahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) helped the Saints extend their winning streak to a season-high nine games. The latter drove in two runs in each end of the twinbill as part of her three-hit afternoon.
Game 1 --- USF 7, Judson 4
Callahan and McDermott (2-for-3, 3 runs) powered the Saints to an early 3-0 lead with Callahan's two-run home run in the first inning and McDermott's solo shot in the second.
Judson (5-19, 1-3 CCAC) eventually chipped away at the deficit to force a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning. That, however, proved to be short-lived when the Saints took advantage of a two-out error to score three runs in the fifth inning. Left fielder Christina Lorenzatti (FR/Beecher, Ill.) had the big hit with her two-run double to right center field as part of a two-hit game for her.
Second baseman Sam Raspopovich (SO/Lockport, Ill.) drove in USF's other run with a single in the fourth inning.
Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) (7-0) kept her perfect record in the circle intact, coming on in relief to record the final eight outs.
Game 2 --- USF 6, Judson 4
Trailing 2-1 after two innings, the Saints used a four-run third inning to take the lead for good. Callahan (2-for-4) drove in the first run of the big inning with her single. McDermott followed with a two-run hit before Maddie Massaro (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) (2-for-3, 2 RBI) drove in the fourth run with her single through the left side. She added her second RBI hit two innings later.
McDermott went the first five innings on the mound to register her third win of the season against one loss. Hannah Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) tossed two shutout innings to tally her first save of the campaign.
The busy week continues on Friday when the Saints travel to Bourbonnais to face NAIA No.16 ranked Olivet Nazarene University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
