Saints Drop Close Decision to Judson

LOCKPORT, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's tennis team looked to gain one final victory to close out the regular season Saturday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a close 4-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference decision to Judson University at Challenge Fitness Indoor Courts.

Nikkie Christiansen (JR/Rockford, Ill.)  and Maria Kuzminskaya (SR/Saint Petersburg, Russia) opened the match with a 6-0 victory at No.1 doubles, but Judson would recover from the early setback and take decisions in the Nos. 2 and 3 slots. The latter victories would give the Eagles the first point of the match.

Continuing her dominant run in singles action, Denisse Lizano (SO/Quito, Ecuador) tied the match at one-all after earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No.2 position. Lizano has now won six of her last seven singles matches.

A 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles from Kuzminskaya would give the Saints a 2-1 lead and also clinch a second win on the afternoon for Kuzminskaya.

Judson (4-10, 3-4 CCAC) would quickly take the lead back, however, after a pair of straight-set victories at Nos. 1 and 4 singles.

Yashleen Kheterpal (SR/Bhilai, Indiafired back with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. The victory would force the third tie of the match.

The final match was a showdown between Grace Monahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) and Judson's Katelynn Coleman at No.6 singles. Coleman was able to get the better of Monahan, winning 6-3, 6-2 to give her team the 4-3 match victory.

Despite the loss, the Saints (5-6, 4-3) will still host an opening-round match in next week's CCAC Tournament as the No.3 seed. They will take on No.5 seed Olivet Nazarene University on Monday (April 26) at Challenge Fitness. The match begins at noon.
