GRANGER, Ind. --- Scoring seven runs over its last four at bats, the Indiana University South Bend baseball team opened its three-game weekend series with a 9-4 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over the University of St. Francis on Friday afternoon at Rex Weade Stadium.
The Titans (12-13, 8-3), who took advantage of six Saint errors on the day, went right to work, getting on the scoreboard in the opening inning without the aid of a hit. They took full advantage of St. Francis starter Angel Sandoval's (SR/Garfield Ridge, Ill.) early wildness using two walks, a hit batsmen and a steal of home to plate two runs.
The Saints (6-10, 4-6) would eventually knot the score at two-all with single runs in the second and third innings on an RBI groundout by John McGuire (FR/New Lenox, Ill.) and an IUSB error.
Indiana South Bend started its flurry of scoring with a three-run fifth inning followed by one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. USF could only answer with two-out, RBI singles from third baseman Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.) and first baseman Joe McGuire (SR/Lockport, Ill.) in the seventh inning.
McGuire (2-for-4, 1 run) was one of three Saints to register multiple hits on the day, joining right fielder Travis Schoonover (GR/Braidwood, Ill.) (3-for-4, 2 runs) and shortstop Noah Kararo (GR/Oswego, Ill.) (2-for-5, 1 run).
Sandoval (1-4) took the loss on the mound.
The series continues on Saturday (April 3) with the Saints hosting Indiana South Bend in a 1 pm doubleheader at DuPage Medical Group Field.
