CRESTWOOD, Ill. --- Roosevelt University's Jordan Mikolajewski became the first pitcher in 12 games to solve the University of St. Francis offense coming within one out of tossing his first shutout of the season in stopping the Saints' season-high 11-game winning streak with a 7-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Ozinga Field.
Designated hitter Eric Maffie (SO/Coal Valley, Ill.) foiled the shutout bid with his RBI double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to score third baseman Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.), who reached base on an infield single with one out. Prior to that inning, no Saint had gotten beyond second base as Mikolajewski (3-2) limited USF to just three hits through the first eight innings. The senior right-hander finished the game allowing five hits and three walks, while striking out five batters.
Roosevelt (12-14, 11-13 CCAC) collected the only two runs it would need on the day in the first inning off Saint starter Nick Villasenor (SR/Addison, Ill.) (2-3). The Lakers added three more runs in the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs, the first one being a two-run shot. The final two runs for the hosts came one inning later.
The loss was the only one on the week in eight games for USF, which hosts St. Ambrose University on Tuesday at 3 pm at DuPage Medical Group Field. St. Ambrose (18-18, 14-5) currently sits one game in front of the Saints (17-12, 15-8) in the league standings and is tied for second place with Olivet Nazarene University (22-16, 14-5).
