Saints' Season Comes to a Close with CCAC Quarterfinal Loss

CROWN POINT. Ind..----  Looking to extend its season beyond the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team saw those hopes dashed in the first round of the single-elimination tournament when it dropped a 2-1 decision to No.3 seed Governors State University on Tuesday afternoon at the Crown Point Sportsplex. The Saints, who had their first encounter with GSU end in a 2-2 draw, came in as the No.6 seed.

USF opened its upset bid by putting the first goal of the match on the board in the 20th minute. Fabian Alvarado (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) recorded the first goal of his collegiate career with Amin Mizyed (JR/Oak Lawn, Ill.) collecting his first assist as a Saint.

Unfortunately, the lead lasted only ten minutes as Governors State was able to find the equalizing goal at the 30-minute mark. Four minutes later, the Jaguars scored again off of a penalty kick to give themselves a 2-1 lead that they would take into halftime.

In the second half, the Saints put up a total of 10 shots with three on goal to attempt to even the score. Zakhar Shkidchenko (JR/Kiev, Ukraine) had the final attempt of the match for the Saints, but his shot was saved by GSU goalkeeper Luis Ramirez. Ramirez would finish with six-of-seven shots saved in the winning effort.

For the Saints, goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (SR/ La Fresneda, Spain) saved seven of nine shots.

The loss ended the Saints' season at 7-6-2 overall. Governors State moves on to the semifinal round of the tournament with its 9-4-2 mark.
