Saints Close Out Home Season With Three-Set Win Over Lincoln

JOLIET, Ill. --- Celebrating their Senior Night, Makenna Bartecki (Lockport, Ill.)Taylor Valant (St. Anne, Ill.), and Brooklyn Withey (Lapeer, Mich.) helped the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team close out the home portion of the season with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Lincoln College on Thursday night at the Sullivan Center.

Withey tied for top team honors in kills with eight, while also attacking at a .238 clip. Valant was one of six different Saints to register at least five kills, finishing with seven, while placing second with her 14 digs. Bartecki added another three digs and one ace to the cause.

Katie Szakacs (Munster, Ind.), who did not play due to injury, was honored, as well, before the match.

USF (13-11, 10-8 CCAC) also received contributions from Lauren Stefanski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.), Alexus Engst (JR/Bloomington, Ill.), and Hannah Monfre (SO/Franklin, Wis.) among others. Stefanski joined Withey with a team-best eight kills, while not committing an error in 14 chances (.571 attack pct.) and boasting the most blocks (four).  Engst totaled 22 assists, while Monfre gained the most digs (16).

St. Francis jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set only to find Lincoln (12-19, 4-14) rally for a 15-14 advantage before the Saints closed out the set with eight of the final 11 points. Four of the points came on a pair of kills each from Stefanski and Withey.

The Saints trailed in both Sets 2 and 3 before rallying. Their farthest gap came at the beginning of the second set when they trailed 9-2, but they responded with a 9-1 run later to go up 18-14 and never looked back. Peyton Baird (SO/Mendota, Ill.) had a pair of key kills to fuel the resurgence.

In Set 3, USF used another eight-point run, this time 8-4, to break an 11-all tie and go up 19-15. Earlier, the Saints had trailed 8-5.

St. Francis closes out the regular season on Saturday (April 3) when it faces No. 21-ranked Cornerstone University (Mich.) at noon
