Saints Score Big in Opener, But Fall in Nightcap

JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis baseball team broke out its big bats in an 18-3 first-game victory over Viterbo University, but could not carry that offense over to Game 2, dropping a 6-1 decision to the V-Hawks at DuPage Medical Group Field on Saturday afternoon.

First baseman/designated hitter Joe McGuire (SR/Lockport, Ill.) had the big day offensively for the Saints driving in four runs with his three hits, all three of which went for extra bases. He authored USF's first home run of the season in the opener.

Second baseman John McGuire (FR/New Lenox, Ill.) matched Joe's (no relation) hit output (three) and double count (two) in the opener alone.

Angel Sandoval (SR/Garfield Ridge, Ill.)Ryan Daly (FR/Plainfield, Ill.), and Kevin Kardas (JR/Hampshire, Ill.) all threw shutout baseball on the mound.

Game 1: USF 18, Viterbo 3

Leading 5-2 after four innings, the Saints sent 17 batters to the plate in a 13-run fifth inning to pull away. Six different Saints authored multi-hit, multi-RBI contests topped by catcher Jake LaSoto's (JR/Marengo, Ill.) 2-for-2, 4-RBI game.

John McGuire paced the 13-hit attack going 3-for-3 (two doubles) with three runs scored and two driven in.

Joe McGuire made it a 4-0 game in the third inning with his two-run home run. He would also double later on as part of his 2-for-4, 3-run, 3-RBI game.

Left fielder Shawn Harper (GR/Plainfield, Ill.), center fielder/second baseman Dolan Nicholson (SR/Denton, Texas) and Daly all collected two hits and two runs batted in, as well, while designated hitter Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.) was the seventh Saint to have at least two hits. He also scored three times.

Sandoval started the game on the mound for USF and worked three scoreless innings before yielding to Michael Beaudoin (SR/Sycamore, Ill.) (1-0), who went the next two to gain the win.

Game 2: Viterbo 6, USF 1

In the nightcap, the Saints managed only four hits with Joe McGuire driving in the lone run with his second double and third extra-base hit of the day in the first inning. That came after Viterbo opened the contest with a three-run first inning off Saint starter Nolan Weis (FR/Lockport, Ill.) (0-1).

Daly and Kardas were a pair of bright spots on the mound. Both allowed only one hit with Daly striking out six against just one walk in his three innings. Kardas worked two scoreless frames.

The two teams wrap up the four-game series with another doubleheader beginning at 1 pm on Sunday at DuPage Medical Group Field.
