MILWAUKEE --- After tallying five goals just three days earlier, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team was unable to find the net against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Cardinal Stritch University, dropping a 2-0 decision on Tuesday afternoon.
The Saints (6-4-2, 5-3-1 CCAC) managed to get just seven shots off on Tuesday after producing a season-high 38 total shots in their win against Trinity International University. Cardinal Stritch, meanwhile, was able to take 20 shots with nine coming in the opening half.
The Wolves (8-1, 8-1) were able to strike first, scoring 20 minutes into the contest before finishing off the scoring for the day with their second goal less than three minutes before the end of the half.
Hunter Fuss (SO/Joliet, Ill.) and Diego Cortes (FR/West Chicago, Ill.) attempted to get the offense rolling in the second half, but their attempts were thwarted by Cardinal Stritch goalkeeper Alexandre Baranes. The final chance to break up the shutout came from Thiago Bandeira (SR/Brazil) with his attempt also being stopped by Baranes in the closing seconds of the match.
Baranes saved all five shots on goal in the shutout victory. USF goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (SR/La Fresneda, Spain) was able to save six of eight shots on goal in the loss.
Tuesday's match marked the final road contest of the season for the Saints. Currently sitting fifth in the league, they will look to climb in the standings with their final two games being at home, where they have yet to be beaten (4-0-2).
USF opens the two-match homestand on Saturday (April 3) against Calumet St. Joseph. The match is slated for a 6 pm kickoff at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
