Sandoval, Saints Make Quick Work of Trinity Christian

JOLIET, Ill. --- Second baseman Josh Tesch (GR/Lockport, Ill.) continued his hot hitting and Angel Sandoval (SR/Garfield Ridge, Ill.) tossed his second career shutout as the University of St. Francis baseball team needed just 88 minutes to defeat Trinity Christian College 10-0 in the first game of a three-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference series Friday afternoon at DuPage Medical Group Field.

Sandoval, who has pitched well all season for the Saints, but had nothing to show for it until Friday, earned his first victory of the spring against three defeats. He lowered his earned run average to 2.04 with the seven-inning shutout.

Sandoval allowed a pair of hits in each of the first two innings, but gave up just three over his final five innings to finish with seven allowed on the afternoon. He also did not yield a walk, while striking out four batters. Only twice did a runner get as far as third base in the contest for the Trolls (7-15, 2-5).

Right fielder Travis Schoonover (GR/Braidwood, Ill.) provided the Saints (6-7, 4-3 CCAC) with the only run they would need just two pitches into USF's first at bat when he drove John VanderWall's pitch down the right field line for his first home run of the season. Schoonover added another RBI on a sacrficie fly in the fifth inning.

The 1-0 score held until the Saints opened the fourth inning with five straight hits leading to a five-run inning. Tesch started it with his third home run in his last four at bats dating back to Wednesday. He finished the day with three hits in four at bats to raise his season average to .359.

St. Francis would go on to add another four runs in the fifth inning.

Center fielder Dolan Nicholson (SR/Denton, Texas) and catcher Jake LaSota (JR/Marengo, Ill.) both produced a pair of hits and drove in one run in the contest with LaSota's two hits keeping him just ahead of Tesch for the team batting lead at .360.

Designated hitter Foster Heise (GR/Lisle, Ill.) also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The two teams continue the series in Palos Heights on Saturday (March 27) with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
