Saints Take Care of Grace Twice with 28-Hit Attack

WINONA LAKE, Ind. --- After spotting Grace College (Ind.) three runs in the first inning of the opener, the University of St. Francis softball team scored 17 unanswered runs to sweep the Lancers at Coach Phil Dick Field by 7-3 and 10-0 counts on Thursday afternoon.

No fewer than five Saints recorded at least four hits on the day as part of an overall 28-hit attack. Left fielder Christina Lorenzatti (FR/Beecher, Ill.) led the way going 5-for-7 with three runs batted in, while two of Kayla Garcia's (GR/Chicago, Ill.) four hits in five official plate appearances went for home runs. She also drove in five runs.

Third baseman Danielle Callahan (JR/New Lenox, Ill.) also homered as part of a four-hit day for her.

Hannah Vachon (JR/Oxford, Mich.) in the opener and Madisen Tucker (JR/St. John, Ind.) in the nightcap combined to toss 12 innings of shutout ball. Tucker also recorded her first shutout of the season, while remaining unbeaten at 5-0.

Game 1 --- USF 7, Grace 3

Grace's early 3-1 lead was wiped out on two swings of the bat when Callahan connected on a two-run home run and Garcia followed with her first of two home runs on the day. Garcia also produced the team's first run with her RBI double.

Shortstop Brittany Osborne (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and both Lorenzatti (3-for-3) and Tucker did the same in the seventh.

Vachon came on in relief of starter Bridget McDermott (SO/Palos Heights, Ill.) and allowed only two hits and one walk, while striking out five batters in her five innings of work. With the win, she improved to 2-1 on the season.

Game 2 --- USF 10, Grace 0

Six different Saints registered at least a pair of hits in Game 2 highlighted by catcher Maddie Massaro's (SO/Romeoville, Ill.) perfect 4-for-4 game with two runs and an RBI.  Garcia (2-for-3) delivered another home run and three runs batted in, while Kaylie Sippel (FR/Beecher, Ill.) recorded both her first collegiate hit and RBIs with a pinch-hit two-run double.

Lorenzatti (2 RBI) put up a pair of hits as did Benes, Callahan and McDermott.

USF scored single runs in the first two innings before pulling away with eight runs over the final three frames, including five in the seventh.

The only run Tucker needed in the circle was the first one in authoring her first shutout of the campaign. She scattered five hits and one walk, while striking out five Lancers.

The Saints (8-2) return to action on Saturday (March 27) when they head to Lincoln, Ill. to face first-year Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Lincoln College in a 12 pm doubleheader.
