Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saints Can't Overcome Early Deficit in Road Loss to Holy Cross

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- Two opening-half goals by Holy Cross College were too much for the University of St. Francis women's soccer team to overcome as the Saints dropped a 3-1 decision in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Holy Cross (6-4, 5-3 CCAC) got the first goal of the match in the opening nine minutes when Audrey Filippo scored off a deflection from a USF defender. The Saints attempted to counter, but the efforts from Litzy Mendez (SO/Joliet, Ill.) and Alexis Marroquin (FR/Lockport, Ill.) came up short on three separate shot attempts.

Holy Cross found the back of the net again when forward Mari Lynch-Pastoor capitalized on the deflection of her original shot. That made it a 2-0 contest 20 minutes into the match.

Marroquin would cut the defecit in half at the 34-minute mark after getting past Holy Cross goalkeeper Chloe Kane. Marroquin's goal was the first of her collegiate career.

Looking to tie the game after halftime, the Saints (1-6-1, 0-6-1) had trouble getting their offense going. USF would manage just three shots total in the second half with only attempts by Angelina Rodriguez (SO/Joliet, Ill.) and Mendez being on goal.

Holy Cross made it a 3-1 contest in the 62nd minute when Filippo authored her second goal of the match. It came after her first shot attempt was blocked by USF goalkeeper Ellie Provo (SR/Dixon, Il), Provo finished the day recording nine saves, while Kane registered five for Holy Cross.

The Saints head to Chicago on Tuesday (March 23) where they will face Saint Xavier University. The conference matchup takes place at 6:30 pm at Deaton Field.
