Saints Shutout in Rematch Versus Holy Cross

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- In a rematch from its 2-2 draw back on Feb 21, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Holy Cross College in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Despite being shutout for the first time this season, USF (4-3-2, 3-3-1 CCAC) did outshoot Holy Cross 17-13 with eight shots coming in the first half. Holy Cross' defense was able to block the first four attempted shots by the Saints, while the other four missed the net.

Holy Cross midfielder Jeff Rafter recorded the first goal of the match, putting the hosts up 1-0 just two minutes before the break.

The Saints' first chance at the equalizer did not come until the 60-minute mark with Amin Mizyed 's (JR/Oak Lawn, Ill.) attempt on goal. Six minutes later,  Anthony Marmolejo (SO/Plainfield, Ill.) came the closest to getting a shot past Holy Cross goalkeeper Lewis Tomlinson, but his attempt was deflected out of bounds. Zakhar Shkidchenko (JR/Kiev, Ukraine) followed with a long shot off a corner kick, but it was also saved by Tomlinson.

Shortly thereafter, Holy Cross (4-5-1, 2-5) added an insurance goal at the 73-minute mark.

Mizyed would get one more chance at breaking up the shutout, but his header attempt was saved by Tomlinson in the 83rd minute. Santos Contreras (FR/Kewanee, Ill.) also had a shot on goal one minute later. In all, Tomlinson recorded five saves to earn the shutout.

Carlos Ferrer Coto (SR/La Fresneda, Spain) collected three saves on five shot attempts as USF's starting goalkeeper. Carson Heglund (SO/Channahon, Ill.) also got some playing time in the final fourteen minutes.

The Saints continue their road trip on Wednesday (March 24), heading to Chicago to take on Saint Xavier University in CCAC play.  Kickoff is slated for 3 pm at Deaton Field.
