LINCOLN, Ill.---- The University of St. Francis men's soccer team suffered from a season-low three shots on goal and lost a 3-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference decision to Lincoln College on Saturday afternoon at Freesmeier Field.
The Saints' lone shot on goal in the opening half came from Morgan McKenzie (JR/Hull, England), who was able to get his attempt past Lincoln goalkeeper Adam Dempsey to give the Saints a 1-0 lead ten minutes into the contest. The goal marked the seventh tally this season for McKenzie, all of which have come in USF's last five contests. It also added to his CCAC-best total goal count.
Despite the early goal, the Saints (3-2-2, 2-2-1 CCAC) found it difficult to get things going offensively the rest of the afternoon, producing only seven shots total. Lincoln was eventually able to tie the game at one-all on a goal from Liam Thornton and the two teams would settle for that score heading in to the break.
The hosts continued to push the pace offensively in the second half, firing three shots towards the net in a span of ten minutes. Goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Cotto (SR/La Fresneda, Spain) was able to save all three and made a total of five saves on the afternoon.
Lincoln (4-0-1, 3-0-1) eventually broke the tie at the 79th minute courtesy of midfielder Abdoulaye Sylla. He would again find the net four minutes later to provide an insurance goal.
Besides McKenzie's goal in the opening half, USF's other two shots at the net did not come until the Saints were faced with their two-goal deficit. The first one came in the 84th minute with the latter following in the contest's closing minute. Both shots were saved by Adam Dempsey, who registered the win.
The Saints will return to Joliet Memorial Stadium on Tuesday (Mar. 16) to take on Roosevelt University in another CCAC matchup beginning at 2 pm.
