JOLIET, Ill. --- Indiana University South Bend denied the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team a winning homestand as the Titans rallied for a 22-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-23 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at the Sullivan Center on Thursday night.
Â
The loss left the Saints at 8-7 overall and 5-4 in league play and closed out a six-match homestand, where USF went 3-3. Indiana South Bend improved to 5-2 both overall and in conference action.
Â
The Saints grabbed the early 1-0 lead in a tight first set that featured eight ties with the last one coming at 20-all. Head coach Cara Currier's club claimed five of the final seven points with Desiree Anderson (FR/Joliet, Ill.) notching two late kills and Brooklyn Withey (SR/Lapeer, Mich.) one.
Â
Indiana South Bend used big runs in each of the next two sets to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Titans registered a 10-1 surge in Set 2 to turn a 10-8 lead into a 20-9 advantage. In Set 3, it was a 10-3 burst that turned a 12-all tie into a 22-15 lead.
Â
Indiana South Bend also built early 5-1, 10-5 and 14-10 leads in the final set only to have the Saints rally to knot the score at 15-all. Another 7-3 push by the guests built the lead back up to 22-18 and USF could only get as close as 23-22 before falling.
Â
Taylor Valant (SR/St. Anne, Ill.) was one of three Saints to record double-figure kill totals. She led the way with one dozen followed by Anderson and Lauren Stefanski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) with 10 each. Stefanski also produced a team-high eight blocks.Â
Â
Indiana South Bend, which hit at a .184 clip to USF's .084 mark, was led by Hannah Marchand's 18 kills and another 13 from Alexis Issette.
Â
Halfway through a four-match week, the Saints hit the road each of the next two days for more conference action against Saint Xavier University on Friday (March 12) at 7 pm and Trinity International University on Saturday (March 13) at 1 pm.
