ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. --- The best offensive scoring numbers of the season for the University of St. Francis football team produced a pair of first-half leads, but the Roosevelt University combination of quarterback Jack Sheehan and receiver Blaize Cobb-Griffin rallied the host Lakers to a 28-20 victory in the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League opener for both teams at Morris Field on Saturday.
Â
Sheehan and Cobb-Griffin connected on all four Roosevelt touchdowns as part of career-high days for both individuals. Sheehan's four touchdown passes for 364 yards were both personal-best marks as were Cobb's four scores and 141 yards receiving. Sheehan completed 28 of his 42 passing attempts with ten going to Cobb-Griffin. Another nine went to Greg Milledge, who also netted a career-high 136 yards receiving.
Â
USF's Ravon Johnson (SR/Bolingbrook, Ill.) hit the 100-yard receiving mark on the day, as well, for the second time in two weeks, finishing with 101 on five catches. Better than half of those yards (52) came on the Saints' first offensive play and their first offensive touchdown of the season when Johnson and Perre' Barbarin (SR/New Orleans, La.) hooked up on a halfback pass.
Â
The touchdown toss was one of two on the day for Barbarin, whose second one midway through the second quarter to Daniel Goetsch (SO/West Chicago, Ill.) from 11 yards out allowed the Saints to regain the lead at 14-7.
Â
Sheehan and Cobb-Griffin accounted for the next 21 points, including capping off the longest drive for either team on the day (93 yards) with a seven-yard score late in the second quarter. Their third quarter touchdowns came on four- and 14-yard pass plays to end 50- and 82-yard marches.Â
Â
The pairs' first-quarter score was the longest at 20 yards out.
Â
USF rallied late to make it a one-score contest when quarterback Eric Maffie (SO/Coal Valley, Ill.) (12-of-25, 110 yards, 1 TD, 1 int.) found Liam Eldridge (JR/San Clemente, Calif.) in the end zone from two yards out to conclude the Saints' longest drive of the season at 80 yards on 13 plays. However, the Saints could not get the onside kick and NAIA No. 20-ranked Roosevelt ran out the remaining 1:29 on the clock to remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Â
Besides winning on the scoreboard, the Lakers nearly doubled the Saints in both yardage (472-239) and time of possession (38:43-21:17). USF's defense, however, was able to thwart Roosevelt three times in the red zone with Scott Tumilty (FR/Villa Park, Ill.), Robert Hall(JR/Bolingbrook, Ill.), Chris Johnson (JR/Hillside, Ill.) and Cameron Holman (FR/Wilmington, Ill.) leading the way. Tumilty, Hall and Johnson all tied for the top spot on the team in tackles with ten each, while Holman came up with a goal-line fumble recovery early to keep USF's lead at 7-0.
Â
Ke'von Johnson was the third of three Lakers to register a 100-plus-yard offensive day, totaling 110 on the ground and another 69 receiving.
Â
Eldridge tied Ravon Johnson with five receptions with his catches netting 58 yards.
Â
The Saints (0-3, 0-1) take next week off before traveling to Bourbonnais, Ill. to face Olivet Nazarene University on March 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
