JOLIET, Ill. --- No worries about a possible upset on the first night of postseason play for the University of St. Francis women's basketball team as the Saints cruised to a 72-41 victory over Trinity International University in the quarterfinal round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday night at the Sullivan Center.
Â
Head coach Steve Brooks' team wasted little time in building a commanding lead using a 17-2 run in the first quarter that extended to the second to go up 21-6 with 7:25 remaining before the break. The lead would get no less than 13 points the rest of the night and reached as high as 34 points early in the fourth quarter.
Â
Eleven different Saints contributed to the scoring cause among 15 that saw court time. Jordan Pyle (JR/Traralgon, Australia) and Justene Charlesworth (JR/Wanatah, Ind.) were the only players on either side to reach double figures in scoring. Pyle totaled 14 points, while Charlesworth was right behind with 12 markers.
Â
Andriana Acosta (SR/Crest Hill, Ill.) garnered game-high rebounding honors with 11 boards, while also netting eight points.
Â
The victory, along with Olivet Nazarene University's 97-82 win over St. Ambrose University, sets the stage for the rubber game of the three-game series between the Saints and the Tigers on Saturday at the Sullivan Center. St. Francis won the first matchup 79-44 on Dec. 30 at Judson University's Christmas Classic, while Olivet Nazarene came away with a 77-73 victory on Feb. 6 at the Sullivan Center.
Â
The latter game was also the last time the Saints dropped a contest. They come in riding a five-game winning streak, while Olivet Nazarene has a seven-game string of success going.
Â
Tipoff is tentatively scheduled for 1 pm.
