Box Score 2 JOLIET, Ill. --- The University of St. Francis women's volleyball team kept its perfect record for the week intact by claiming a pair of victories at its own tournament on Friday night. The Saints opened with a come-from-behind 16-25, 27-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10 win over Mayville State University (ND), which came in among others receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll. That was followed by a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 decision over Ottawa University (Ariz.).
Lauren Stefanski (SR/Plainfield, Ill.) among others had a big night with a .360 attack percentage, 31 kills and nine blocks (four solo, five assist). Freshman Desiree Anderson (Joliet, Ill.) also played a big part with her 21 kills and seven blocks (three solo, four assist).
The two wins moved USF's record to 5-2 on the young season.
USF 3, Mayville State 2 (16-25, 27-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10)
No fewer than five Saints registered at least nine kills as part of an overall 70-kill match with Stefanski's 21 kills and .500 attack percentage leading the charge. She was also a part of four of the team's seven blocks with her three solo and two assist stuffs.
Playing in just her sixth collegiate match, Anderson was also impressive with a season-high 14 kills and a .258 attack mark.
Brooklyn Withey (SR/Lapeer, Mich.) just missed recording a double-double with her 10 kills and nine digs, while Stephanie Woods (JR/Westchester, Ill.), and Taylor Valant (SR/St. Anne, Ill.) each provided nine kills.
Alexis Engst (JR/Bloomington, Ill.) led the two-person setting charge with her 32 assists, while Katie Szakacs (SR/Munster, Ind.) topped the team's dig chart with 42.
Mayville State (14-4) used a 10-0 run midway through Set 1 to claim that set before the Saints rallied for wins in Sets 2 and 3. The former set was tight with no team leading by more than four points. USF opened with a 6-1 advantage in Set 3 and never gave it up.
In Set 4, Mayville State used a closing 10-4 run to tie the contest and force a fifth set. The Saints responded with 11 of 15 points out of the gate in Set 5 to seal the decision.
USF 3, Ottawa 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20)
Stefanski and Anderson were a force at the net combining to register 6.5 of the team's nine blocks. Stefanski also led the way with ten kills, while Anderson chipped in with seven. Anderson's six total blocks (two solo, four assist) were both a personal and team best.
Withey stayed consistent with her nine kills giving her nine or more in four straight matches. She also authored a team-high .300 attack percentage.
Szakacs boasted the top mark on the team in digs with 27 with Gabby Paelmo (JR/Schaumburg, Ill.) adding 13.
Engst and Hannah Pacheco (SO/Lockport, Ill.) ran the offense to the tune of 18 and 17 assists, respectively.
Despite winning in the minimum three sets, the Saints actually trailed all three times, including as much as 10-2 in Set 1. They used one 8-2 run to get back in the contest and another to close it out.
In Sets 2 and 3, the deficit was 6-3 early before the Saints responded with an 8-3 run to go up 11-9 in Set 2. They would never trail the rest of the way in that set.
In Set 3, the two teams battled back and forth before St. Francis closed out the night with five unanswered points.
The Saints wrap up their busy week Saturday night at 5 pm when they head to Bourbonnais, Ill. to face undefeated Olivet Nazarene University (4-0) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
