MARION, Ind. --- Wrapping up the non-conference portion of its schedule at the Indiana Wesleyan University Tri-Match, the University of St. Francis women's volleyball team was dealt two setbacks on Friday, falling in three sets to NAIA No.21 ranked Indiana Wesleyan 25-8, 25-15, 25-9 and in four sets to Cornerstone University (Mich.) 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19.
Match One
Indiana Wesleyan (13-3) took control of the match early in each of the three sets jumping out to 14-4, 10-2 and 18-5 leads that the Saints could never recover from in falling for the second time this season to the Wildcats. The hosts clicked on all cylinders from an attacking perspective, hitting at a .386 clip, while St. Francis could not get anything going offensively (-.059).
Desiree Anderson accounted for five of USF's 19 kills, while
Peyton Baird provided the only two blocks.Â
Hannah Monfre led in digs with eight.
Match Two
In a match that featured 26 ties and 15 lead changes, Cornerstone (13-10) prevailed in the end to drop the Saints two matches under .500 at 11-13. USF did rally from an early 12-5 deficit in the opening set to take a 21-19 lead, but Cornerstone's
Kaylee Dykema (13 kills) broke a 23-all tie with a pair of kills to close things out.
In Set 2, the Saints gained the early advantage (8-4) before five late ties resulted in the tight finish. This time, two attacking errors by Cornerstone allowed head coach
Cara Currier's team to come out on top.
Set 3 provided the lengthiest see-saw battle with nine ties and seven lead changes. USF took a 20-19 lead late only to have Cornerstone tally six of the final seven points to gain a 2-1 edge in the match.
In the final set, Cornerstone jumped on top 7-3 and never led by less than three points the rest of the match to close out the victory.
Anderson and
Lauren Stefanski both produced double-figure kill totals with Anderson registering a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs). Besides her 10 kills, Stefanski also led the way with five blocks.Â
Stephanie Woods added another four blocks.
Other leaders for St. Francis were
Kaylie Sippel with 26 assists and Monfre with 20 digs.
