BOURBONNAIS, Ill. --- On the verge of extending its winning streak to a season-high three matches, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team had those hopes dashed in the final nine minutes of its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup with Olivet Nazarene University on Tuesday night when the Tigers rallied with two late goals to claim a 2-1 decision.
Fabio Hasler scored the equalizer for the hosts (8-2, 5-1 CCAC) at 81:22 with Max Jasper putting home the game-winning goal with just 2:51 remaining in regulation.
Up until that point, the Saints (3-8-1, 3-3-1) held the lead for much of the contest on the 13th goal of the season for
Zakhar Shkidchenko. It came at the 16:28 mark, or two minutes after his only other shot on goal.
Both teams were limited in their number of shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes (3 for St. Francis, 2 for Olivet Nazarene) before the Tigers went on the attack after the intermission. They tallied nine shots on goal with
Carson Heglund stopping each of the first six attempts after the break.
For the match, Olivet Nazarene totaled 11 shots on goal and 20 shots overall to USF's eight total shots, five of which were on goal. Two of St. Francis' other three shots on goal came from
Pablo Rubio Guerra.
Olivet Nazarene also attempted 12 corner kicks to just one for the Saints.
Heglund finished with nine saves on the night, while ONU's
Leonard Bewig posted four saves.
Coming into the contest, the Saints had been unbeaten in four of their last five matches.
The setback was the fourth by one goal for St. Francis this season, three of which have come in league affairs.
