Baseball Drops Season-Opening Series Finale To Lyon College

BATESVILLE, Ark. --- NAIA No. 21 ranked Lyon College scored in six of seven innings, including multiple runs in four frames, to gain a weekend three-game sweep of the University of St. Francis baseball team with a 13-3 victory Sunday (Feb. 9) morning.

The Fighting Scots (6-0) started their scoring in the second inning by plating a pair of runs. USF wiped out that deficit with one swing of the bat when Josh Tesch (SR/Lockport, Ill.) connected on a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. For Tesch, it was his second home run in as many games.

That would be all the scoring on the day for the Saints, who again left multiple runners on the base paths, including the fourth and fifth innings when the first two batters reached, but did not score. USF also loaded the bases in the seventh inning after two outs.

In total, the Saints left 11 runners on base Sunday and, for the weekend, they stranded 26 baserunners over 23 innings.

John Peterson (JR/Palos Heights, Ill.) and Jonathan Wolf (SO/Kalamazoo, Mich.) each had a pair of hits for the Saints.

Nine different players posted hits for the hosts as part of a 15-hit attack, including Alan West (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Jake Michener (3-for-3, 1 RBI). West also gained the win on the mound, striking out nine Saints in five innings.

Three Lyon pitchers struck out 13 USF batters on the day.

Michael Beaudoin (0-1) gained the start on the mound and took the loss for the Saints.

Up Next

USF (0-3) hits the road again next weekend when it travels to Upland, Ind. to face Taylor University in another three-game series. It starts with a 3 pm single game on Friday.
