Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Thornton's 29 Points Leads to Impressive Senior Day Win Over TIU

JOLIET, Ill. --- Jorden Thornton (SR/ Hoffman Estates, Ill.) scored a career-high 29 points on his Senior Day and the University of St. Francis men's basketball team tied the mark for the fourth-most points in a single game in school history with a 118-78 thumping of Trinity International University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Sullivan Center.

Thornton was one of four seniors among six total that were honored before the game to score in double figures. Twelve Saints in all made their way into the scoring column.  The three other seniors to total at least ten points were Cole Micek (SR/Los Angeles, Calif.) (22 points), Malik Bailey (SR/Tutwiler, Miss.) (19), and Jarret Gmazel(SR/Manhattan, Ill.) (13). Those four players also accounted for 16 of USF's 21 three-pointers on the afternoon.

For Micek, it was his second straight game of 20 or more points. He tallied a career-high 29 markers on Wednesday in an 85-81 setback to Holy Cross College.

The other two seniors recognized were Quin Schnieders (SR/Oak Grove, Mo.) and Mitch Kwasigroch (SR/ Manhattan, Ill.), who finished with six and thee points, respectively.

Leading 27-20 with 7:42 remaining in the opening half, the Saints (10-17, 8-13 CCAC) went on an unanswered 14-point run to build their advantage to 21 points and never led by less than that point total for 21 of the final 24 minutes. In the second half, the lead was 30-plus points over the final 18:31 and got as high as 46 points with just under two minutes to play.

USF built its 57-28 first-half advantage by shooting 50 percent from the field (21-of-42), while holding Trinity International to a 28.1 percent mark (9-of-32). The Saints only got hotter after the break, connecting on 22-of-38 field goal attempts (57.9 pct.) to finish at 53.8 percent (43-of-80) for the afternoon.

USF also handled the ball at a near-perfect clip, committing only six turnovers.

Trinity International (5-21, 4-16) overcame its first-half shooting woes by converting 17 of its 34 second-half field goal attempts to nearly double its first-half point total, finishing with 50 points after the break. The Trojans were led by Diamond Presniakovas, younger brother of former Saint Edvinas Presniakovas. He finished with 16 points.

The 118 points scored on Saturday matched then-College of St. Francis' point total in a victory over National College of Chiropractors during the 1973-74 season. The all-time record for points in a game came during the 1980-81 campaign when the Saints totaled 138 points in a win over George Williams College.
