JOLIET, Ill. - The University of St. Francis men's soccer team remained undefeated this season as the Saints played to their second straight two overtime match in a row with a 0-0 scoreless tie against the Taylor (Ind.) Trojans this Tuesday (Aug. 27) night at ATI Field in the Joliet Memorial Stadium.
The Saints, who are 1-0-2 overall to date this fall, battled Taylor on the turf in a physical non conference match which included seven yellow cards issued and a combined 40-plus fouls assessed. USF was called for 22 fouls while the Trojans were whistled for 20 infractions.
Both teams had several good scoring opportunities throughout the 110 minutes of action, but outstanding performances by both squad's goalkeepers prevented either team from getting on the scoreboard. Junior goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (JR/La Fresneda, Spain), this week's (Aug. 27) Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Defensive Player of the Week, continued his fine play by stopping all nine Taylor shots on goal. Coto's biggest stop of the night came in the 59th minute of the match with a diving save on a penalty kick by the Trojans' Josiah Wieland. Taylor's goalkeeper Luke Williams also turned in a noteworthy effort with eight saves in a complete-match performance.
The two teams each registered 18 total shots in the match, which included nine apiece in the opening 45 minutes of action. USF would account for all three of the shots taken in the two extra sessions, including two in the second overtime.
In corner kicks, Taylor claimed a 10-3 advantage with six of those coming in the second half.
Freshman midfielder/forward Anthony Marmolejo (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) along with senior midfielder Mason Messina (SR/Shorewood, Ill.) and junior defender Malek Rashid (JR/West Bank, Palestine) all notched a team-high tying two shots on goal for the Saints. Taylor (2-1-1), which has now played in three consecutive two overtime matches to date, was paced offensively by Josiah Wieland's three shots on goal.
USF is now idle until next Wednesday, Sept. 4, when the Saints resume their current four non-conference match home stand taking on Clarke University (Iowa) in Joliet starting at 7 p.m. (CT).
