Men's Soccer Advances in CCAC Tourney With Shootout Victory

CHICAGO, Ill. - The University of St. Francis men's soccer team kept their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament hopes alive as the Saints recorded a shootout win against Roosevelt after both teams played to a 1-1 two-overtime tie in this Saturday's (Nov. 9) CCAC Tournament Quarterfinal-Round match at RU's IIT Stuart Field.

With the win, USF advances to this Wednesday's (Nov. 13) semifinal round of the 2019 CCAC Tournament to face Olivet Nazarene in Boubonnais, Ill. The Tigers upset Saint Xavier, 3-2, on the road in a Saturday (Nov. 9) quarterfinal-round tilt in Chicago, Ill.

The Saints, under fourth-year head Dan Cross, upped their season record to 9-5-5 overall with the victory.

The tourney contest was scoreless for the first 63:26 minutes until Roosevelt scored on an assisted goal by Ronan Perennes from the middle of the box. The Lakers held the advantage for the next 18-plus minutes before USF tallied the equalizer as forward Isaac Brown (FR/Rockton, Ill.) fired a shot from the left side near the RU post which eluded goalkeeper Mario Graciano to knot the score up at one-apiece. Forward Kevin Sanchez (SR/Malden, Ill.) received an assist on Brown's tally.

As a result of the two overtime tie, the match went to a shootout with the Saints receiving the first shot attempts. The winner would occur on USF's fifth-shot attempt by midfielder Stefan Jakovljevic (JR/Bregenz, Austria) as Saints' goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (JR/La Fresneda, Spain) followed by denying Michael Flores' shot on net in the Lakers' final opportunity to continue the shootout.

For USF, forward Reuel Erastus-Obilo (SR/Potters Bar, England) along with Brown, midfielder Sergio Peres (JR/Goiania, Brazil), and Sanchez all had successful shootout goals in that sequence order.

Roosevelt, which concluded its season at 12-5-1 overall, held a decisive 30-17 total shots advantage, which included a 16-5 margin in the second half. The Lakers would total a combined seven shots in the two overtime periods while USF tallied four with two in each extra-period frame.

Coto made 15 saves in 90 minutes of work for the Saints to earn the win while Mario Graciano went the distance and recorded three saves for the Lakers.

USF also earned five corner kick opportunities in the contest while Roosevelt was awarded six attempts. The Saints were called for 13 fouls and the Lakers were assessed for seven infractions.
