CHICAGO, Ill. --- Three unanswered goals by Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer front runner Roosevelt University put a halt to University of St. Francis' season-high four-match winning streak in a 4-1 contest Wednesday afternoon.
The win kept the Lakers' unbeaten string in league play intact at 6-0, while boosting their overall mark to 8-3. The Saints slipped to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2 against CCAC competition.
Roosevelt jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match's first five minutes before the Saints countered on Anthony Marmolejo's (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) breakaway goal at 13:46. For the freshman forward, it was his fifth goal of the season.
Head coach Dan Cross' club then had a golden opportunity to take the lead at the 30-minute mark only to have Roosevelt goalkeeper Mario Graciano deny the Saints' penalty kick for one of his six saves on the afternoon.
Twelve minutes later and just before the break, Roosevelt was also denied on a penalty kick only to have the ball kick off USF goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto's (JR/LA Fresneda, Spain) leg enabling Ronan Perennes to score the eventual game-winning goal on his rebound shot.
Roosevelt added some breathing room on an unassisted goal by Jose Solis at the 62-minute mark before Albert Arabik and Luis Arreola switched roles from the game's first goal with Arabik capping off the scoring on Arreola's assist with nine minutes to play.
USF did have four scoring chances in the second half only to be stopped by Graciano each time. The Saints also had another attempt hit off the crossbar.
St. Francis returns home Saturday to face Holy Cross College in another CCAC matchup. The match is slated to begin at 3:30 pm at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium.
