Saints Tie Trinity International In Two Overtimes

DEERFIELD, Ill. - For the fourth time this season, the University of St. Francis men's soccer team played in a 110-minute match and for the fourth time this fall the result was a tie as the Saints ended up in a 1-1 two-overtime draw with Trinity International this Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action at TIU's Schartner Field.

The Saints, who currently stand at 7-4-4 overall and 4-3-2 in the CCAC this season with the tie, were the first to strike and did so early in the contest. Just a little over six minutes into the match, USF defender-midfielder Jorge Navas (JR/Bolingbrook, Ill.) put the Saints up 1-0 with his first goal of the year with midfielder Sergio Peres (JR/Goiania, Brazil) picking up an assist. The USF goal at the 6:20 mark represented the match's only score for the remainder of the first half and for the opening 29 minutes of the second period.

Trinity International (5-6-3, 1-4-3 CCAC) was able to finally get on the scoreboard just eight seconds into the 74th minute of play as Josiah Joseph tallied the equalizer on an assist from Luka Eric to knot the contest all up at one apiece. The Trojans, who out shot the Saints 8-3 in the opening half, did so in the second 45 minutes as well by claiming a 7-5 margin.

In the first 10-minute overtime frame, TIU controlled play as the Trojans accounted for all three shots attempted by either team with one being on the USF net that was stopped by goalkeeper Carlos Ferrer Coto (JR/La Fresneda, Spain)

The second overtime period produced a combined total of five shots of which USF registered four attempts. The Saints managed to kick two of those on the TIU goal as midfielder Stefan Jakovljevic (JR/Bregenz, Austria)'s shot at the 103:25 was saved by goalkeeper Daniel Hill as was midfielder-forward Anthony Marmolejo (FR/Plainfield, Ill.)'s shot with 11 seconds left to be played in the match.

USF, which was out shot by the Trojans 19-12 in the match, received a seven-saves performance from Coto. Hill made one less save than Coto as both goalkeepers were in net for the entire 110 minutes.

In corner kicks, Trinity International posted an 8-5 advantage. The Trojans received two opportunities in the first overtime while USF did likewise in the second 10-minute overtime period.

Individually, Navas led the Saints with two shots on goal. Marmolejo racked up a match-high five total shots while forward Oscar Leon (SO/Cary, Ill.) along with Navas each compiled two apiece.

The Saints will now get set to face the Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) Wolves this Wednesday (Oct. 23) in what will be their final regular-season home appearance of the 2019 season.  A 7 p.m. (CT) start time is scheduled for the CCAC outing at ATI Field in Joliet (Ill.) Memorial Stadium.
